Warnings against transformation of UNIFIL into occupation force in south Lebanon
will eventually transform it into a force of occupation, and explode the situation there, again. During a press conference for the representatives of political and national parties and figures, the participants referred a memorandum to the UN Secretariat-General, demanding the UN Chief instruct the UNIFIL to commit themselves to UN resolution 1701, literarily.
This came as the Lebanese government is failing to properly react to a trend by the UNIFIL to go past the text of the resolution. The UN forces are proposing projects that would place Lebanon under a choking international tutelage. For instance, UN resolution 1701 states that the mission of the UNIFIL is to support the Lebanese forces and monitor the ceasefire, however according to the rules of engagement, the UNIFIL is authorized to use force to make sure that their regions of operation are not being used for so called "hostile acts.
" The rules of engagement also state that in case the Lebanese army was not in position to secure these regions, the UNIFIL will do everything necessary to carry out their mission. According to Hoteit, they can consider any gathering of people, anywhere, as a gathering to plot for hostile acts and therefore raid the location, detain people and open fire in case of resistance or self defense. The participants at the press conference stressed they reject that the UNIFIL carries out what the Israeli enemy has failed to achieve.
They also warned the Lebanese government against continuing to turn a blind eye at this dangerous matter, saying this will put south Lebanon, the southerners and the UNIFIL in front of an exploding situation that could extend beyond south Lebanon.
