Arab Summit – Resolutions
the Arab countries in addition to heads of delegations and Arab League Secretary
General .
The Arab leaders decided to hold the upcoming 20th Arab summit under chairmanship of the Syrian Arab Republic in Damascus in March 2008 .
The Arab Summit issued resolutions related to the Arab –Israeli conflict and its developments, the Palestinian issue, adherence to the Arab peace initiative as approved in Beirut `s summit in 2002 without amendment and to the occupied Syrian Golan.
The summit resolutions voiced support to the Palestinian national unity government , calling for lifting the siege imposed on the Palestinian people and rejecting the US unilateral sanctions imposed on Syria.
The resolutions also touched upon the developments of situation in Iraq , solidarity with Lebanon and supporting it in addition to crystallizing a unified Arab stance to take practical steps to free the Middle East from weapons of mass destructions .
Regarding activation of the Arab peace initiative ,the summit underlined the Arab countries commitment to the Arab peace initiative as approved in Beirut summit in 2002 based on the international legitimacy resolutions and principles to end the Arab-Israeli conflict and establish just and comprehensive peace.
The summit stressed full support to Mecca agreement that led to formation of the Palestinian national unity government, urging all Arab countries to support this government and the Palestinian authority as to play its role to meet the Palestinian people needs and realize their interests and national aspirations .
The summit condemned the political, military and economic siege and all aggression and procedures taken by Israel against the Palestinian people , urging the international community to resume help to the Palestinian national authority and Palestinian people and to respect their democratic option .
On situation in Iraq , the Summit stressed that the Arab vision of the political and security solution regarding the challenges that Iraq is facing is based on respecting its territorial integrity and independence and its Arab and Islamic identity .
" The Arab vision sees that achieving stability in Iraq requires a balanced political and security solution that handles the reasons of the crisis and uproots the sectarian seditions and terrorism." The summit resolutions said.
The summit called the Arab and Iraq`s neighboring countries to exert efforts to achieve the national reconciliation and hold the Iraqi comprehensive national concordance conference as well as expand the political process and rehabilitate the security and military forces on national bases.
The summit agreed to hold Arab consultative summits regarding the Arab causes and other summit for discussing the economic, social and developmental matters .
The Summit reiterated its past resolution on the UAE`s islands and on supporting the peace and unity in Sudan .
The summit`s resolutions touched upon necessity of work to boost cooperation with states of South America, the relations with Europe , African Union and China in addition to spheres of economic and social joint Arab action and establishing an Arab Customs Union .
The summit stressed the Arab adherence to the just and comprehensive peace as a strategic choice underlining that " the peace process is inseparable and it can`t be achieved but by the full Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Arab territories including the occupied Syrian Golan to 4th June 1967 line and reaching a just solution to the Palestinian refugees problem in accordance with the UN General Assembly resolution No 194 for the year 1948 and rejecting all kinds of settling.
The summit denounced the Israeli diggings were made in the vicinity as well as under the foundations of Al-Aqsa Mosque, calling the international concerned organizations and institutions to shoulder responsibilities to preserve the Islamic and Christian holy places.
The Arab summit asserted Arabism of al-Quds, rejecting all Israeli illegal procedures to Judaize and annex the city.
On the occupied Syrian Golan, the Arab countries backed Syria`s just demand and right to restore the occupied Golan to line of the 4th of June 1967 on bases of peace process and international legitimacy resolutions and Madrid terms of reference.
The Arab countries considered all Israeli procedures aiming at changing the legal, natural and demographic situation of the occupied Golan as null and void and pose a violation of the international agreements and the UN charter and decisions.
The summit rejected the US unilateral sanctions on Syria and the so- called Syria Accountability Act, considering it as a breach of the international law principles, UN resolutions and the Arab League charter.
The summit authorized the Arab Peace Ministerial Initiative Committee to continue efforts and form a team work to make the necessary contacts with the UN Secretary General, UN Security Council members, the Quartet committee and with the other concerned parties for resuming peace process and starting serious negotiations on basis of the agreed upon references, UN relevant resolutions and land-for-peace formula.
