Palestine Interior Minister Resigns

Palestine Interior Minister Resigns

officials said.‏

Information Minister Mustafa Barghuti confirmed that Haniyeh had accepted the resignation of the interior minister.‏

A source in Haniyeh`s office in Gaza City also said on condition of anonymity that the prime minister had accepted the resignation.‏

An official at the interior ministry said Qawasmeh had submitted his resignation and had completely stopped working.‏

A gunfight between Hamas and Fatah forces erupted in Gaza City shortly after the resignation.‏

The shooting broke out near the headquarters of the pro-Fatah National Security force.‏

There were no immediate details on casualties. Six people have been killed in factional violence in Gaza over the past 24 hours.‏

On Monday, gunmen of the rival movements traded fire, killing two Fatah fighters and wounding at least 10 people despite an agreement to end the violence.‏

The latest clashes erupted in several locations in the coastal strip and brought the toll to six dead and 52 wounded in 24 hours, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.‏

Among the dead were two employees of a Hamas-affiliated newspaper who were shot after being pulled out of a taxi at a Fatah roadblock Sunday.‏

The fresh clashes came as a new truce was to go into effect in the Gaza Strip from 12:30 am (2130 GMT) Monday.‏

The factions have been united since March in a coalition government set up with the express aim of ending such fighting.‏

Palestinian Information Minister Mustafa Barghouti pleaded with the two sides to bring their forces under control.‏

"Not only the future of the government but the future of all the Palestinian people will be endangered if these bloody acts continue,`` he warned.‏

Hamas spokesman Ayman Taha said the two sides had agreed to stop the fighting, to withdraw armed men from the streets and to release the hostages. Fatah officials confirmed the deal.‏

"In order to maintain national unity and preserve Palestinian blood, Hamas and Fatah leaders met and agreed to end the fighting and remove the checkpoints," Taha said.‏

Under the agreement, gunmen from the rival factions were ordered off the streets and any hostages being held were to be released.‏

Sunday`s fighting began after two Fatah activists were shot dead by unknown assailants in Beit Lahiya.‏

Hamas denied any connection to the deaths. The Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the Hamas armed wing, said it is committed to national unity and putting an end to the fighting.‏

Later, two Palestinians were killed and 11 more wounded when fighting erupted near the presidential compound in Gaza City.‏

The fighting erupted as the Israeli occupation`s security cabinet debated how to respond to intensifying Palestinian rocket fire from Gaza, including five missiles launched Sunday.‏

A regime official said no decisions were made. The official was speaking on condition of anonymity because the meeting was closed.‏
