6 gunmen killed in north Lebanon
According to Reuters, security sources said at least two of the militants killed in early Thursday clashes were Lebanese and three were believed to be Saudis. The nationality of the sixth man remains to be identified.
The sources also said two Lebanese soldiers were slightly wounded in the fighting that erupted in the Qalamoun village, five kilometers from the northern port city of Tripoli.
Furthermore, a military official speaking on the condition of anonymity stressed that troops have surrounded the remaining militants in the village, who were allegedly linked to the al-Qaeda-inspired Fatah al-Islam group.
Witnesses said the army launched a raid in Qalamoun at about 1 a.m. local time which was met with a fiery response from the militants.
There has been sporadic fighting around the Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr el-Bared in Lebanon where clashes with Fatah al-Islam militants have claimed 194 lives, including at least 60 gunmen and 82 troops, since May 20.
Lebanese Defense Minister Elias Murr announced that the army now controls 80 percent of the camp, accusing the group of using civilians as human shields when confronting the military.
Meanwhile local news sources have reported two hand-made bombs were hurled at a military cheickpoint near the city of Sayda but caused no casualty. The event prompted Lebanese soldiers to shoot in the air.
