LEBANON : Camp clashes claim 4 more lives
was killed "when terrorists opened fire during the night on an army jeep" in the Abu Samra area of the northern port city, a military spokesman told AFP on Sunday.
He said seven soldiers were wounded in an ensuing three-hour firefight with members of the al-Qaeda-linked group Fatah al-Islam, whose gunmen are still engaged in fierce battles with the army in a nearby Palestinian refugee camp in Nahr al-Bared.
A police officer said a police sergeant, his daughter and his father-in-law were also found dead in a building in Abu Samra after the clashes.
"A chief warrant officer of the Interior Security Forces who was in a building in Abu Samra where militants being hunted by the army had holed up was found dead on Sunday morning," the officer said on condition of anonymity.
"Preliminary inquiries show that the officer, his daughter and his father-in-law were all killed by the militants during exchanges of fire with the army," he added.
Eighty soldiers have now been killed in the deadliest internal violence to afflict Lebanon since the 1975-1990 civil war.
A total of 151 people, including at least 51 militants, have died in the violence
