33 Taliban killed in Afghanistan

33 Taliban killed in Afghanistan

offensive was launched in Kandahar province -- the birthplace of the extremist Taliban movement -- hours after the bombing that destroyed a police vehicle, provincial governor Asadullah Khalid told reporters.‏

Thirty-three Taliban were killed in the sweep in Zhari district, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) west of Kandahar city, which was carried out by Afghan troops and police backed by NATO-led forces.‏

Three were wounded and one was arrested, the governor said.‏

There was no independent confirmation of the toll and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, which assists the Afghan security forces, could not immediately confirm the incident or its involvement.‏

The ultra-conservative Taliban movement, allied with al-Qaeda, took up arms in Kandahar in the early 1990s and had seized power by 1996. They were driven out in an invasion led by the United States in late 2001.‏
