Bush makes surprise visit to Iraq
Bush landed Monday at an air base in al-Anbar province west of Baghdad.
The White House said the US president, whose itinerary was not immediately known, was accompanied to Iraq by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley, and other senior aides.
His trip comes as violence continues in Iraq, casting doubt on the effectiveness of his troop build-up strategy.
Next week, Gen. David Petraeus, the top US commander in Iraq, and Ryan Crocker, the US ambassador in Baghdad, will testify before Congress.
Bush stopped in Iraq ahead of his visit to Australia for an economic summit with Asia-Pacific leaders.
