Maliki: US criticism counterproductive

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said some of the criticism from Washington in advance of this month`s progress reports had been counterproductive.‏

He said his government had stopped Iraq from sliding into sectarian civil war.‏

``Regrettably these statements (referring to those made by US critics) sometimes cross the line and at the same time send the regrettable message to terrorists that the security situation in the country is weak and the political situation is not cohesive," al-Maliki told reporters.‏

He said US critics may not know the enormity of the destruction in Iraq and did not appreciate the achievements of the Iraqi government in dealing with the civil and sectarian war.‏

The Democratic-controlled Congress is growing increasingly frustrated with the slow pace of political reform in Iraq.‏

Clinton and fellow Democratic Senator Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate`s Armed Services Committee, have called for Maliki to be voted out because of his failure to find a political solution to Iraq`s bitter sectarian conflict.‏
