Nahr al-Bared battle comes to end
al-Bared refugee camp had been besieged for three months and held by the militants.
The Palestinian camp, a network of tunnels and houses reinforced against possible air attacks, finally fell to a mass assault on Sunday after troops killed at least 37 militants as they made a desperate pre-dawn bid to break the siege, the army said.
Another 15 gunmen were arrested, some of whom had managed to make it to nearby villages but were caught in the manhunt that included troops searching roofs and watertanks.
More than 220 people, including 158 Lebanese troops, were killed during the standoff, which started on May 20 near the camp outside the northern city of Tripoli.
Shaker al-Abssi, leader of the group, is also confirmed to have died in the clashes.
An informed source, requesting anonymity, said the corpse of Shaker al-Abssi was among the bodies of Fatah al-Islam militants taken to a state-run hospital in Tripoli.
Abssi is believed to have been part of a third group that followed the path of a river running between the southeastern part of the camp and the village of Ayun al-Samak in a remote mountainous region.
