Bush meets Rudd for talks on Iraq

President George W. Bush and Kevin Rudd met on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Sydney on Thursday.‏

Rudd, whose Labor Party has a commanding lead over Prime Minister John Howard`s party in opinion polls ahead of the general election later this year, told Bush that Australian troops will withdraw from Iraq if his party wins the upcoming election.‏

"The good thing about our relationship with the US is that it`s old, strong, and broad enough to sustain differences of opinion," Rudd is stated to have said after his 45-minute discussion with Bush.‏

"It`s important in an alliance such as this to know that we have the liberty to express differences of opinion as well as to discuss those areas where we have common purpose," he added.‏
