Violent crime rises across US
an FBI crime report, 1,417,745 cases of violent crime had happened across the US in 2006. The number of victims of murders, robberies, rapes, and aggravated assaults in 2006 in America is equal to the number of people living in Estonia Republic in Europe.
The occurrences of violent crime rose nearly 1.9 percent, while the number of murders saw an unprecedented increase of 1.8 percent since 2005. The Uniform Crime Reporting Program counted more than 17,000 murders nationwide.
Moreover, in 2006, the number of the victims of robberies increased to almost 450,000 showing a rise of 7.2 percent compared to 2005. The report mentions that almost half of the people committing violent crimes are acquitted of charges.
An estimated 77 percent of US murders last year were carried out with a firearm, and 7 percent were committed using a knife. An estimated 90 percent of murders last year occurred in metropolitan areas. The people living in big cities are two times more likely to become the victims of such crimes.
The crime rates continued a two-year upward trend after a short decline in crime between 2002 and 2004. According to the FBI report, every 14 seconds one house is robbed and every 26 seconds a car is stolen.
Last year nearly 14.4 million individuals were arrested. Although most of the suspects were soon released, the US still has the most populated prisons housing 2.2 million inmates overall.
