TB jab `may kill HIV positive kids`
vaccine is made using a bovine version of tuberculosis bacilli and was developed to protect children from the deadly disease. However it causes serious infections in some infants and young children who are infected with the HIV virus.
Nearly one-third of the world`s population have received BCG jabs.
One study indicated that infection with the bacillus has a mortality rate of 75 percent with 70 percent of the victims being HIV positive children according to Dr. Mark Cotton, a pediatrician and HIV researcher at Stellenbosch University in South Africa.
An estimated 40 million people worldwide are infected with the HIV virus. The virus attacks the immune system, making patients vulnerable to a range of infections including tuberculosis.
